Importance of water

Your parents probably never stopped going on about you drinking enough water. BUT this is often one of the most important and easiest things you can do to put your body into an optimum state. Also, as you know the body is 70% water so it does seem logical that there’s something important about it for us.

A good water intake (2-3L per day) is needed for the body to function optimally.

Below are a list of reasons why it’s important:

  1. Improve physical performanceOur bodies use up a lot of water during exercise. So staying hydrated before, during, and after helps to protect your body from harm, and helps you to perform better.  Correct hydration can reduce fatigue, improve endurance, and more. It can also reduce soreness after exercise.
  2. Help you to lose weight.  Some studies have shown that people who are on diets lose more weight when they also increase their water intake. This is probably because being properly hydrated can keep you feeling satiated (full). Also digestive organs function better so may be more efficient in breaking down food and extracting more nutrients (energy) from the food. Therefore, further helping you to feel more satisfied.
  3. Boost your brainpower.  Several studies have shown that people drinking water during cognitive tasks performed better than those people who did not drink water during the tasks. Even mild dehydration can impair cognitive function in the short-term. So next time you need to focus on a task, keep a glass of water next to you and keep sipping.
  4. Protect against disease.  Proper hydration has been linked to the prevention of a variety of health conditions and diseases. Staying hydrated may protect against kidney stones, constipationasthmaurinary tract infectionscoronary heart disease, and even possibly some cancers.

As one of my favourite holistic health practitioners Paul Check says ‘The body is like a burning fire of working organs and tissues. If you do not have enough water (and quality water) you will burn the water out!‘
