Best alcohol swaps to stay healthy but enjoy yourself too!

It’s the summer and that means holidays.  It means barbecues with the family.  It means hanging out with friends.  It means brunches, lunches and dinners..and often … and a lot of that means alcohol.

It’s easy to have a few drinks and forget what you’re having and before you know it you’ve taken in a whole boatload of calories in one session.  Alcoholic drinks aren’t calorie free and they do impact the body in more ways than simply calories in vs calories out. Saying that, you all love a drink and here’s some cool swaps you can make to make sure you can still have a good body as well as a good time 😉

Beer.  Beer can contain quite a lot of calories.   That’s why it’s called a beer belly!  Switch to something like Coors Light or Bud Light instead which contains less calories and isn’t quite as bad for you.

Gin and Tonic.   G&T is a summer classic, enjoyed fresh with a slice of lemon over ice.  The gin is fine; most spirits contain very little calories.  It’s what goes with it that matters.  Instead of going full sugar tonic, go for slimline instead.  It makes a world of difference to calorie intake and with a slice of lemon over ice you’ll barely notice the difference.

Rum/Whisky/Vodka.  Most people won’t just drink it neat, but they’ll want to put something like Coke or Lemonade in it.  Switch it out for diet versions or zero versions and you’ll keep those calories down.  Again it makes a world of difference.

Wine.  Unfortunately there is no low calorie alternative to wine, but if you’re drinking rose or white then put a bit of ice inside and have some water after each glass.  Not only will you be less drunk but you’ll also not have taken as many calories in.

The ‘trick’ is not to avoid your favourite drinks completely, but just to make smarter choices.  I’m all for people enjoying themselves, which is why I talk about swaps and switching.
