Expectations and Social Media.

It is human nature for us to compare ourselves with others. Whether in terms of income, looks, character, lifestyle etc, it’s something we all instinctively do even if we try not to or claim we don’t. We live in a time where social media has heightened this instinct of ours, as we are now able to watch and observe the lives of the majority of the world. From celebs to ‘influencers’ to high performers we can watch them through our phones as if we know them whereas 50 years ago most households didn’t even have a TV, so you could only observe people in your network which for most of us was definitely not to the calibre as the ones in our current ‘virtual network’.

The problem with social media is that what everyone presents is this best/perfect version of themselves.

You see:

  • Their highlight reel, their best bits.
  • Them become an overnight millionaire.
  • Them drop 15% body fat in 90 days.
  • Them at a luxury holiday with a gorgeous woman in their arm.

These repetitive marketing messages have distorted our sense of what it really takes to succeed.

What you do not see is:

  • The countless hardships and failures the entrepreneur made when she was struggling hard to get her fashion ecommerce business off the ground.
  • The amount of years Derrick spent yoyo dieting before finally adjusting his lifestyle and developing the mind-set where he can finally lose 10kg of fat in 90days.
  • You do not see that the influencers luxury holiday in Monaco was from years of building a network of strong trusting relationships so he got invited to a billionaire’s luxury home.

It’s super important that you remind yourself of these facts every time you consume media/social media! Otherwise you can get sucked in and develop a very unrealistic expectation of yourself which does you more harm than good.

Use it as inspiration/education or a means to connect with people and build relationships but never for comparison.

Love to you all!
