Fruit: Good or Bad?
Nowadays fruit gets a bit of a bad reputation and negative press that claims that fruit is full of sugar and therefore bad for you, but is that true and what’s the full story?
It’s true that the main energy source from fruit is sugar however it’s normally not as high as you’d expect because most fruits are full of water, fibre, vitamins and not just sugar. If you compare it to other crap that you eat regularly you will see its not something to worry about.
Let’s do a quick comparison shall we?
A 150g box of blueberries vs the blueberry muffin you have from Costa every morning with your latte. Well, in the box of blueberries you have 15g of sugar and 85 calories. In your blueberry muffin there is at least 32g of sugar and a whopping 367 calories.
Fruit is often also loaded with additional health benefits like vitamins, minerals, fibre and water which satisfies your body’s cravings in a way that the muffin sure can’t, and will ultimately help you function better.
So what is the problem with fruit?
Have you ever heard of someone that has had excessive sugar from eating too much fruit!? No, of course not. But by eating artificial foods that contain insane amounts of added sugar that no naturally grown fruit can compare to, it’s quite easy to have too much sugar in one sitting.
Another problem is when you drink your fruit. Even if they are 100% natural you end up consuming an unnatural amount of sugar that frankly you would not be able to if you ate the fruit because you would simply be too full! For example, 1 medium apple has 19g of sugar whereas a small 330ml glass of apple juice can have as much as 34g of sugar. And who only has one small glass? Its not uncommon for someone over the course of the day to finish a whole 1L carton of apple juice. But I highly doubt they would eat 7 apples.
So Don’t worry about eating too much fruit, instead watch out for the other crap you eat and drinking fruit juices that make you consume an unnatural amount of ‘fruit’ just cos you can drink it.
