Why You Should Choose Farmer’s Markets Over Supermarkets

Why You Should Choose Farmer’s Markets Over Supermarkets

Hi Peeps,

So those of you who follow me on instagram know that every weekend my ritual is to visit my local farmers market 🙂

I’m obsessed with it and while all the shops were going mad during lockdowns, the local farmers market was keeping us strong and healthy.

Anyway here’s my list of why I’m obsessed and think you should be too:

Seasonal Eating

Eating seasonally means rather than something being stored for ages then imported, you get something that’s just been picked that morning or the day before. Your food is fresher & has a higher nutrient profile.

Cheaper Organic Food than Supermarkets

A lot of people get put off farmers markets because they think they’re really expensive. Sure there are a few items that are overpriced, I give you that, but on a whole Organic Food in your local supermarket is significantly more expensive. And, if like me you know how to choose quality cuts of meat that are not over priced, then your money can really go a long way.

You can talk directly to the farmer

How cool is it that you can speak directly to the person that grows the vegetables/ raises the animals you eat as food? You can ask about their methods, how they feed/ raise their animals and you can even visit the actual farms.

Supports local agriculture & business

I’m delighted that we are now in a culture that is all about promoting local businesses rather than defaulting to big corporations. Shopping local is one of the best ways to do this and also given that you are financing local agriculture and sustainable farming, it means we rely less on imported goods as well as reducing the carbon footprint of mass production/ poor industry farming.

Way better taste

This is a no brainer. Fresher foods, free from pesticides, grown naturally according to the season, OR animals fed a good diet and allowed to move and are going to be much healthier and tastier 🙂

Customized

You can call the farmer/ butcher and tell them exactly what you want, how much, how you want it cut up/prepared.

They’re ever growing, just google local farmers market and guarantee you will find at least 1 very near you.

All the best,

Alex
